Heidelberg is a relatively ‘young’ city. Lots of German cities have a history dating from before Christ, but Heidelberg is mentioned first in 1196. One thing the town is really famous for is its University which was built in 1386 and celebrated its 600 year birthday in 1986. Whilst you are studying or working in Heidelberg it is really worth going to see it.
SHOPPING
If you’re a shopaholic you can go ‘all out’ in Heidelberg, the stores are a combination of well-known names and designer goods with traditional Bavarian crafts. The main shopping street is the traffic-free Hauptstrasse, which is filled with stores selling glass, crystal, handcrafts, and other items. Heidelberg is also known for its markets, including the one held on Wednesday and Saturday mornings at Marktplatz and another held Tuesday and Friday mornings at Friedrich-Ebert-Platz. The best thing to do is explore the streets yourself when you get there either with classmates or colleague you meet during your study or internship in Heidelberg.

PARKS AND SIGHTS
During your stay as an international student in Heidelberg you should explore the city and all of its sites. The castle of Heidelberg alone is for a lot of people a reason for visiting the city. This castle, designed mostly in the Renaissance style, is considered one of the most important cultural monuments in Germany. It is a perfect site to see on a sunny Sunday afternoon.
Castle Garden
The gardens castle is designed by the famous garden architect Salomon de Caus, he built several terraces around the castle, giving a great view on to the castle, the Old Town and even into the Rhine Valley. The garden has a very peaceful ambiance.
University Library
Here you can explore the outside sculptures and ornaments of the building, then go inside to see busts of famous scientists and the nice basement construction. There is also a ever changing exposition at the attic of the building. Again it is really worth paying a visit.
